Track 1 and 3 students enjoyed the cultural arts performance of Jack and the Beanstalk. The question and answer session after the performance allowed the students a "behind the scenes peek" at how the "magic" of the show was created. Students were curious about how the Giant was able to tower above the character Jack. The cast members of the show allowed the students to see the stilts that the actor wore to play the character of the Giant effectively. Additionally, the cast demonstrated how they made thunder as a sound effect. Thank you PTA for sponsoring this performance for BRES!
Case 21 began this week for grades 2-5 on tracks 1-3. Students participated in the new assessments for reading, math calculator active and math calculator inactive. Case 21 is similar to the NC End of Grade assessments in its format and question types. The student information gathered from the Case 21 assessments will support teachers in making data based decisions regarding instruction as we go into fourth quarter.
Last night was our last Jersey Mike's Spirit Night! Last night Ms. Goodson and I visited with many families as they ate in or came in to purchase take out. It was great to see the Pendergrass family, the King family, the Scarpetti family and several others come in for dinner. Thanks to Mr. Tart who popped in to support BRES by ordering Jersey Mike's take out! A big thank you goes out to Jersey Mikes at 10-10 & the Food Lion intersection for hosting a month long of BRES Spirit Nights! A huge thank you goes out to our PTA for organizing and partnering with Jersey Mikes for our March Spirit Nights!
Speaking of the wonderful PTA, it's true...we are set to get our shelter on the 3-5 playground within the next few weeks. Our PTA has worked hard to build the Capital Campaign Fund. The Capital Campaign monies were designated for a shelter. The funds were matched by a county grant and within the next few weeks construction will begin our shelter. Picnic tables will be purchased for the shelter area. Additionally, the PTA has purchased matching umbrellas for the picnic tables on the K-2 playground. A BIG thank you goes out to everyone for their hard work on the PTA and for all of the donations to make the Capital Campaign a success for the students and staff at BRES!
Round 2 of School Assignment is in full swing! Parents and families still have the option of participating in round 2 and exercising school choice. Round 1 families that were accepted into Banks Road Elementary School should have received their notification from WCPSS and a track assignment card from the Front Office. If you have not received your colored card from us, please call the front desk and speak with Ms. Stephenson at 890-7333. We are excited to have new students and our their families joining our Trailblazer Family!
Whew! Just another week where we are blazing the trail to success!

March is flying by here at BRES! We are quickly approaching the end of the month. This week we welcomed back Track 1 students and teachers. It's hard to believe that Track 1 is beginning their 4th quarter of the school year.
Today Track 1 fourth graders visited the North Carolina Symphony today. Students were dressed to impressed today to venture out to the Raleigh Auditorium.
Tomorrow, March 28th, Track 1 & 3 students will attend the cultural arts performance of Jack and the Bean Stalk in the afternoon.
Next week, we will hold a parent information session about the Common Core for parents on Wednesday morning at 8:45 and at 6:00 p.m. in the evening.
There is no school on April 6th in observance of the holiday. On Tuesday, April 10th we will conduct our PTA General Meeting. We will vote in new officers for the 2012-2013 PTA Board.

A Friday Evening Delight
In preparing for next week, I opened up a piece of mail. To add to a wonderful week at BRES already, I hold in my hands a card from Our First Lady, Michelle Obama! (Ok, I set the card down so I can type this blog entry!) The card is a thank you note congratulating Banks Road Elementary for achieving the Silver Award in the Healthier US Schools Challenge. Let me share a few lines from the card:
"As a winner of the Silver Award, your school is among the very best of the best, going above and beyond the minimum requirements to help ensure your students live full and active lives. This is an extraordinary accomplishment, and you should all be incredibly proud of what you have achieved."
The Healthier US Schools Challenge is the cornerstone of the Let's Move campaign. It is an ambitious initiative to solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. For more information on the Let's Move Campaign please visit http://www.letsmove.gov/ . Thank you to our wonderful and dedicated cafeteria Manager Ms. Moriarty and her staff who without their dedication to cooking healthy this award would not be possible.

Students Recognition for Character is coming!
Students will be recognized for demonstrating various character traits at our General PTA Meeting on April 10th at 6:30. Students will be nominated by their classroom teachers and will receive a certificate at the PTA meeting. This is a wonderful way to recognize and celebrate the achievements of our Banks Road Elementary students! Students who will be receiving an award will bring home an invitation to share with their families. If you have any questions, please call the front office.

At our information session we will share common expectations in the new curriculum including higher order thinking skills, students demonstrating learning in a variety of ways and how students will utlilize 21st century skills.
Each session will take place in the Media Center. Please call the front office to reserve the a.m. or p.m. session at 890-7333.

Celebrations
Celebrating success in school is something that should be done each and every day. This morning at our Staff Meeting, we celebrated several people and the contributions they make to our school everyday.
Ms. Brenda Morse, our school secretary does just about EVERYTHING to support a smooth operating front office and school building. We count on Ms. Morse to count supplies, do ordering, support with school procedures, etc.; not to mention support the front office by greeting students and parents, signing students in or out, and handling field trip funds. Ms. Morse will be recognized by Mr. Tata next Tuesday at the Board Meeting because she has been selected to receive the WCPSS Employee Excellence Award! We are proud of Ms. Morse and thrilled that she is representing Banks Road Elementary School as an Employee of Excellence!
Mr. Tart and Ms. Mathis were also celebrated for being flexible and for putting students first. We are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated staff here at BRES! Banks Road Elementary School is truly a special place for staff and students.

Jump Rope for Heart a Success!
Thank you to Ms. Williford, teachers and parent volunteers that came out on Thursday to support students in the Jump Rope for Heart activities. Ms. Williford organized stations on the front fields and students eagerly participated in each activity. The weather was absolutely amazing and the students could not have been more excited or pleased with the day! Ms. Williford will be announcing the grand total for the funds raised soon. Read below for information about Jump Rope for Heart and the cause this event supports. This information came from the following address: http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Educator/SchoolPrograms/School-Programs_UCM_312838_SubHomePage.jsp
The American Heart Association and YOU-Working for Kids’ Health Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart are national education and fund-raising events sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). These events engage elementary and middle school students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart health issues. And….both programs are great ways to satisfy the physical education standards as determined by NASPE (National Association for Sport and Physical Education) and AAHE (American Association for Health Education).
Dollars raised through Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart give back to children, communities and schools through American Heart Association programs, including:
• Ongoing discovery of new treatments through research
• Advocating at federal and state levels for physical education and nutrition wellness in schools
• Training courses for middle and high school students in CPR
