School Messenger January 25, 2014

Good morning Trailblazers and happy Saturday morning to you!

First things first, I want everyone to have the most up-to-date information about inclement weather, WCPSS and BRES information. Remember that WCPSS has asked individual schools not to use the School Messenger system for delays and closings due to system overload and the delay time with messages. WCPSS will post information via Twitter, the Facebook page and the main school website page for all delays, closings or should we need to dismiss school early. Additionally, parents should check local media as WRAL and NBC 17 will post and announce all delays and closings as well. I have posted this information along with specific website information on the parent’s page of our BRE S school website and on the Principal’s Desk blog.

This week: Artist In Residence is all week and Monday and Tuesday of next week. Students will work along-side artist Bryant Holsenbeck during specials to create wire sculptures that will be on display in our Café. January 21-28 the Banks Road Art Room will host artist Bryant Holsenbeck for this year's Artist in Residency program. Together, Ms. Holsenbeck and the students will create random weave forms that will become a beautiful new art installation for our school. If you would like to work for the whole day, feel free to sign up for both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Inclement Weather information

Trailblazer Parents,

Here is a repost of information I sent out earlier pertaining to inclement weather. This information is posted to our Parents page on the BRES website as well. Questions? Feel free to call or email! Mrs. Graf

...from December 2013 blog

The winter months bring unpredictable weather patterns to NC. Please see below for information on how to access the latest school closing, delay or early release communication methods. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Mrs. Graf

In the event that schools are closed or delayed due to inclement weather, please monitor the Wake County Public School System’s own electronic media and local television, radio, and print news media for the latest information.

In the event a decision is made to dismiss early after students are already in school, parents will also be notified via the district-wide Emergency School Messenger telephone system. BRES will not send out an individual call via the School Messenger system in order to not overload the system and interfere with the system-wide WCPSS notification call.

Parents should use these resources to stay abreast of school closings, delays, and early dismissals:

Parents Guide to New Test Scores

Trailblazers,
I am receiving questions about the 2012-13 EOG scores. I wanted to resend out the information below.

New EOC and EOG test scores

In the spring of 2013, students took new tests based on the new, more rigorous standard under the Common Core State Standards and N.C. Essential Standards.

The new tests tell us how well students are learning under the new standards. With the new standards, students are being asked to learn more, and at earlier ages. Typically, when new tests are introduced and standards for learning are raised, a change in scores is expected.

It is important to note that a change in scores does not necessarily reflect a change in students' academic progress. Students continued to grow academically in 2012-13. These new scores simply mean that we are expecting students to reach higher levels of learning than ever before.
