It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of a school year but it is true. Track 1 students only have the month of May left of school! The end of June will be here sooner than we all think for track 2, 3 and 4 students. We are approaching a milestone for our 5th grade students and their families: 5th Grade Celebration.
Mark your calendars 5th grade parents and students. June 1st and June 29th at 10:00 we will host our 5th Grade Celebration! Please join us in the multipurpose room for awards and refreshments as we celebrate the efforts and achievements of our graduating class of 2011-2012.
If you are interested in supporting the PTA with preparing for the celebration, please call the school for PTA contact information.

Spring Beautification-Thank you!
Thank you to the Lukes, Bruegglers, Giancolas, Ryals, Martinez, Mendler, and the Gozy families for coming out today to beautify our campus this morning. We spread about four yards of mulch, potted annuals and perennials at the front entrance and really focused our efforts in the back courtyard area. Thank you to the PTA for organizing the event. Check out the action shots of our hard work today!

Successful Student Recognition and PTA General Meeting!
What a wonderful turnout tonight at our PTA General Meeting and Student Character Trait Recognition Awards! Thank you so much for spending your Tuesday night with us here at BRES. Tonight our PTA shared the wonderful news that we will be getting a shade structure installed on the 3-5 playground, picnic tables, and umbrellas for the staff and students to enjoy throughout the summer and fall. Our PTA did an outstanding job with the Capital Campaign to raise the funds for the shade structure and they also received a matching grant from Wake County.
Speaking of our wonderful PTA, tonight we elected new members to posts for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. A big thank you goes out to parents who have taken on these positions to support our school: Michelle Mendler-President, Jenn Giancola-VP, Susan Naylor-Secretary, Thaihien Hicks-Treasurer and Nathan Luke-VP. There are several positions still vacant if anyone is interested. It is a wonderful opportunity to become involved and support BRES.
Good character is appreciated here at BRES. We understand that each day we have an opportunity to build up and strengthen character education in our students. Tonight we took the time to honor students in Kindergarten to Fifth Grade who demonstrate good character. Over 40 students were recognized in all! Thank you to the families who came out tonight to see the formal recognition. This is an event that I hope will become a Trailblazer Tradition!
Just a reminder about this Saturday. Come on out with your green thumb, wheelbarrow, and gardening tools for our Spring Beautification Day from 9 a.m. until Noon. We will be here sprucing up our campus just in time for some beautiful spring weather.
As always, thank you for what you do each day to support BRES as we continue to BLAZE the TRAIL to SUCCESS!

Common Core Parent Information
Last night BRES offered the first information session on the Common Core. Beginning in July the learning and teaching process will "look" different at BRES. Different is a GOOD thing! Different is exciting! The new curriculum offers standards that are rigorous and challenging. Teachers will embed the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT) into instruction and students will have the opportunity to demonstrate learning in various ways.
Our staff is excited and ready for the Common Core. We have spent a great deal of time on teacher workdays, staff meetings or early release days reviewing the curriculum, reflecting on current instructional practices and preparing materials to support student learning in the classroom. We have been given guidance and support from WCPSS and from the NC Department of Education in the form of information, webinars and additional curricular resources.
Be on the look out for additional parent information sessions about the Common Core in the month of May. The following is a link to the Common Core website that you can explore to learn more about the Common Core initiative. http://www.corestandards.org/ You can also visit the Wake County Public Schools website at www.wcpss.net and click on the Common Core icon.
